Helping Our Youth Grow Into Successful Adults

As I reflect on the recent change in our country's leadership and the climate of our world today, I am ignited to look deeper within myself for things that need "changed". I used to be someone who resisted change and got really emotional about times when things would be "different".

As an upperclassman in high school, I remember being anxious to get out of high school, yet being nervous about leaving everything familiar behind. My senior year, I began to distance myself from those who were closest to me in order to prepare for the time when I wouldn't see them as often. When my mother and brother dropped me off at Ohio University for my freshman year, all I had was an empty dorm room - smaller than most bedrooms I ever had - and a few of my things. I didn't know what to do; I didn't know anyone; I was afraid of all the "change".

As time progressed, I learned to reflect on the past and embrace the present while preparing for the future. Getting out of my dorm and being open to meeting new people helped me adjust to campus life. I met a lot of fun, intelligent people. I joined a sorority. I took time to get to know some of my professors. I spent more weekends on campus than I did trying to get home (back to the familiar) and by doing that, I now have memories and friendships that will last me a lifetime.

Nothing has been the same since my high school years. The friends I had in high school are scattered all over the country. And even if we were all in the same geographical area today, I wonder, would we all be in the same "place"? Over time, we all change. Our circumstances change, relationships change, we change jobs. But change always gives us an opportunity for preparation.

As we journey towards "our" graduation in 2011, we have a chance to prepare ourselves for this huge change. In the meantime, we can embrace the present and ask ourselves if there are things in us that need to be worked on so we can approach our future with a sense of confidence instead of fear, and readiness instead of resistance. Let's help each other through this change, using the shift in our country's leadership as a reminder that although change can be uncomfortable and can take a lot of adjustment, it also provides positive opportunities and invokes a sense of inspiration for growth in us all.
